The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design govern new construction and alterations. In medical facilities, accessibility is paramount, as a significant portion of the patient population may have mobility challenges.

1. Accessible Routes

From the parking lot to the exam chair, the path must be unbroken.

  • Door Widths: Doors must provide a minimum clear opening width of 32 inches. In practice, 36-inch doors are standard for medical use to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers comfortably.
  • Thresholds: Must not exceed 1/2 inch in height (beveled) or 1/4 inch (vertical).

2. Reception & Service Counters

The check-in experience must be inclusive.

  • Counter Height: A portion of the main counter must be no higher than 36 inches above the floor for a length of at least 36 inches.
  • Check-Writing Shelf: If provided, it must also meet height requirements.

3. Exam Rooms

Medical facilities must ensure that a percentage of exam rooms are accessible.

  • Clear Floor Space: There must be a 30x48 inch clear floor space next to the exam table.
  • Turning Space: A 60-inch turning circle is required within the room.

4. Restrooms

Bathrooms are one of the most common areas for ADA violations.

  • Grab Bars: Required on side (42" min length) and rear (36" min length) walls.
  • Sink Height: Rim or counter surface no higher than 34 inches.
  • Toilet Location: Centerline of the toilet must be 16-18 inches from the side wall.
